Flyer design and spoken word performance for the United Voices / Voces Unidas Open Mic at the Bronx Art Space, August 2013.
The themes for the evening were the school-to-prison pipeline, racial profiling, and Stand Your Ground. I performed three verses from Work and the New Middle Class and Blackbody Radiation, centered around the experiences of “invisible” classes in the United States. It was empowering to utilize those verses to channel the feelings of dread I felt after hearing of Zimmerman’s acquittal, watching Fruitvale Station, and generally exploring the effects of the commodification, exploitation, and dislocation of black bodies.
I also designed the flyers for the event, which pay homage to five recent victims of racially-motivated violence. A special thanks to the members of United Voices / Voces Unidas and New Day Church for allowing me to be a part of this powerful event.
